MEET THE MAKER

I have been sewing and making for most of my life, but I never really knew what I wanted to be until hat-making found me. I grew up in a small town in North Carolina where hats were considered a thing of the past and craftspeople had all but been forgotten.

I discovered the art of millinery in 2010 through a required course while attending undergrad for a degree in Costume Design and Technology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

I’ll never forget the feeling of pulling my first felt over a mold and shaping it with my hands. It had never occurred to me that hats could be made by hand.

THE ROAD TO SANTA FE

I spent the next few years packing up my car and driving across the country to work seasonal costume shop gigs at regional theaters.

Getting more specialized in my skills along the way and working for larger establishments is what eventually landed me in Santa Fe as the Assistant Milliner at the Santa Fe Opera.

After finishing up my second summer at Santa Fe Opera, I was (literally) called back to Santa Fe to spend the next year immersed in a four-decade-old custom hat business in the downtown area.

RAMBLIN’ ROSE

A GoFundMe funded by friends was the start of Ramblin' Rose in August of 2018.

My hat-making focus changed from couture performance-based pieces to everyday, functional, and timeless headwear. While being trained in many mediums, I now primarily work in two different materials, straw and fur felt-traditional materials made to last a lifetime with regular wear and maintenance. I use my hands, steam, and a growing collection of wooden tools to build every hat. My work is inspired by vintage silhouettes, natural color palettes, utilitarianism, and the life-stories of my custom clients. Ramblin' Rose Hat Co. is a calling. Hats are my passion and I’m especially thankful to bring them to life as a part of the Santa Fe community.

I work extensively with each client to design a hat that suits their unique style and life. Due to my dedication of leaving a small (but mighty) footprint in the hat industry — I work on hats one at a time and like to call the process “a lesson in patience.”
